Making Progress…Slowly

3 Dec

We have one deadline. Our holiday home plane leaves Jacksonville on the 24th, so we kind of need to be near Jacksonville before the airport gates close. We have about 260 miles left, and three weeks to do it.

No problem really, except we are getting a little weary of one night hops down the ICW. We keep toying with the idea of going to the outside (down the Atlantic coastline), but we are very torn. We are torn mostly because we are only going to head this way once, and there are so many cool towns and little rivers to see. Small town America is alive and well along the ICW, and we really don’t want to skip these moments.

How else would we have seen the peat bogs of the Great Dismal Swamp, VA, had dinner with friends in the cutest town of Southport, NC, learned that rice paddies used to be prevalent in Georgetown, SC, met another sailing family on the trimaran Kachina in Hampstead, NC, or discovered that the nicest marina staff is in Myrtle Beach, SC?

Each of us could go on and on, and we know that these memories are the things our girls will remember when we talk about the ICW and the early parts of our journey. It’s not always about getting there fast. As each mile creeps by, as slowly as we could run it, we just need to keep reminding ourselves of this. Someday we’ll get to sail again…I hope!

You could continue on the ICW as you wish at the pace you desire. If you don’t make it by the time you need to you could moor and rent a car to make it in time. It just may cost some extra $$. Follow your dreams if you can since you only live once.
